Access to Almscliff is a privilege, not a right. The crag is on privately owned land and is not designated as open access. This means that it's very important that climbers look after the crag and behave well to maintain a good relationship with the farmer and the currently excellent access we enjoy.
The farmer who owns Almscliff does not want the crag to be used at nightime for a lamping venue and continued daytime access relies on climbers respecting his wishes. For advice on how to pick an appropriate alternative venue for lantern sessions and minimise your impact, read this article
Parking and Approach
Be careful not to block gates and be aware that your car may be damaged when the farmer brings cattle along the road, so park sensibly.
Local BMC volunteers worked hard to install a stone slab access path across the muddy field in 2021. Please use this to approach the crag and don't walk along the top of the easily damaged dry stone wall (here or anywhere else,) as some inconsiderate visitors have done in the past.
Group Advice
Large student groups partying on the crag to the accompanyment of loud music have frayed relationships with the farmer in the past. The more irritated the farmer gets, the more cows he puts on the land each winter!
