Avon Gorge has been called ‘the most significant urban crag in Britain’, and is home to countless wonderful trad, mixed and bolted routes. To showcase its unique and historic climbing, and to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the BMC, the ClimbBristol team has planned a day and night of festival fun on Saturday 26 July.
What’s happening at the BMC Bristol Climbing Festival?
The day will be split between two venues, starting with a daytime climbing event at the crag, and culminating in an evening party at a local climbing wall.
Between 1030am and 6pm the Sea Walls will be the focus of our event and the climbing. Feel free to drop in to the ClimbBristol basecamp under the cliff – for advice on the best hidden gems from friendly local experts, food, exhibits, stalls, gear demos and much more. Here our festival partners will be running bouldering and speed climbing competitions and free climbing and bouldering tasters. Avon pioneers, never assembled in one place before, will be mingling and no doubt telling epic tales from across the decades. Just round the corner in New Quarry, BMC Ambassador Steve McClure will be giving a sport climbing masterclass.
Then at 7pm we’re kicking off an evening party at Redpoint Climbing Centre with talks and slideshows, a bar and music well into the early hours. The highlight will be a ‘stand-up’ interview of early Avon luminaries Sir Chris Bonington and Mike Thompson by Stephen Venables: should be a classic!
All parking for the daytime event (except for organisers, disabled persons, & cyclists) will strictly be on The Downs, with walk-down access via The Gully to the foot of New Quarry.
How do I get a place on the Steve McClure Masterclasses?
We have 8 FREE masterclass spaces to give away, and due to the nature of the venue you'll need to be able to sport climb at least 6b.
To be in with a chance of getting a place email winfreestuff@thebmc.co.uk stating your regular onsight and redpoint sport climbing grades. The chosen 8 attendees will be notified by email on the 11 July.
