BMC launches The Climate Project

Make a real difference – to the local landscapes that you love and the global climate crisis. We’ve teamed up with Moors for the Future for an exciting new project.

As the realities of climate change build, we’re changing too. Our mission is to reduce our impact on the environment and do what we can to take action against the climate crisis.

The Climate Project is a BMC campaign to support the work of Moors for the Future. Out on our wild moorlands grows an amazing plant called sphagnum. When sphagnum is growing healthily, this little plant powerhouse takes as much carbon out of the atmosphere as a tropical rainforest.

Sponsor one square metre of sphagnum for £25

Peat moorlands cover 15% of the UK, but many have been dug up, drained or destroyed. The Peak District moorland landscape is now the most degraded in Europe and damaged peat can be a great carbon emitter.

Moors for the Future was founded in 2003 to fight back. So far they’ve transformed over nearly 8,000 acres of peat moors across the Peak District and South Pennines.

The Climate Project supports the work of Moors for the Future. This will make a real difference, as healthy moorland will:

Actively fight the climate crisis
Reduce wildfire risk
Reduce flooding risk
Protect endangered wildlife

It costs £25 to plant one square metre of sphagnum moss and create a healthy moor.

Tell us how many square metres of sphagnum moss peatland it takes to offset the effects of consuming one litre of petrol/diesel and then we'll have a measure of how much to donate to live with our consciences or to give us an idea of just what benefit one square mtere delivers for our £25 - how significant will it be?

In response to the adjacent comment about how much CO2 is captured by paying for 1m2 of repairs, I'd say ignore any beneficial impact on CO2 capture, and just think about repairing the peatland bogs for its own sake. If we're trashing part of our fantastic landscape heritage we need to halt and reverse the damage so that it will be there for future Brits to enjoy. That is worth it alone in my book.

I think it would be useful to make it possible to make a monthly donation rather than one offs. I couldn't see that as an option and I certainly woudl have signed up to it. I'm not going to remember to donate each month.
