Eric Langmuir, mountaineer, instructor and author, has died of cancer aged 74.
A long career in outdoor education included stints as director of Whitehall Outdoor Centre in the Peak District, and head of Glenmore Lodge in the Cairngorms. He also chaired the Scottish mountain rescue committee, for which he was appointed MBE. His book Mountaincraft and Leadership was published in 1969, has never been out of print, and is still regarded as essential reading for anyone venturing into the British hills. Ed Douglas has written an obituary for Eric, which can be viewed on the Guardian website
