How to volunteer at the BMC

This page is designed for anyone who is interested in volunteering with the BMC. Below you will find information on the roles we have available and how to start out volunteering with us.

We’re always looking out for new volunteers to join our community and have a great range of roles across the UK. We have listed the main roles on the following webpage though the types of roles we have on offer often change with the organisation and as our events grow and evolve.

We want to support our volunteers as much as possible, and therefore offer training, support and cover some expenses. We offer as much support as you need to achieve and enjoy your time volunteering with us. Details of what we offer, expect and provide our volunteers with can all be found in the Volunteering Handbook.

Why volunteer with us?

The BMC is the representative body for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers. Our aim is to be the natural champion and community hub for all those who climb hills, mountains, rocks, ice and indoor walls; to promote the interests and protect the freedoms of climbers, hill walkers, mountaineers and ski mountaineers. By joining our community of volunteers, you will have the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals while promoting and supporting the work of the BMC to make the outdoor community an accessible, safe and enjoyable space for all.

To reward our volunteers for their dedicated work we have a number of ways to thank our volunteers including annual awards, tokens of appreciation and a celebration of the community during National Volunteers Week in June.

Volunteering Roles at the BMC

While many of our volunteering roles are permanent positions requiring specialist skills, we also require volunteers for one-off support at competitions, crag clean-ups and at Hills2Oceans litter-picks. We are currently working on a comprehensive list of roles, but in the meantime a summary can be found here:
