Report: European Bouldering Championship 2013

Posted by Rob Adie on 30/08/2013

The last major IFSC senior bouldering competition of the season - the IFSC European Championship Bouldering 2013 - took place in Eindhoven in the Netherlands over the first weekend in September.

GB team members competing were: Gill Peet, Shauna Coxsey, Diane Merrick, Helen Haldenby, and ,for the first time a member of our female junior bouldering team, Tara Hayes, Jon Partridge, James Garden, Dave Barrans, Ben West and, another junior team member, Nathan Phillips.

The previous weekend, several of the team took part in the IFSC Boulder World Cup in Munich and both Dave Barrans and Shauna Coxsey made the semi finals with Shauna ending up with a well deserved podium place. Report here

Qualification rounds took place on Saturday in Eindhoven, with the top ten in each group going through to the semi finals.

In the morning it was the women's groups. Shauna Coxsey showed her steel by qualifying for the semi finals top of her group. For the second weekend in a row, Gill Peet narrowly missed qualifying by coming 11th in her group.

The afternoon was the men's qualifiers. Once again Dave Barrans pulled it out of the bag and made the cut - qualifying in 7th place in his group.

Sunday morning started with the semi finals; with the top six, from each semi final, going through to the finals.

Unfortunately, Dave Barrans finished 15th and so failed to make the cut, as did Shauna Coxsey who actually finished 7th (not 6th as some people initially thought),  and so missed getting into the final by the smallest of margins. Shauna took more attempts to gain her 3 tops than the other women who made the final - apart from Mina Markovic who topped 4 blocs.
