Public access to Beacon Hill is restricted between 1st April-1st August to aid with conservation and restoration of the surrounding heathland (an initiative started in 2022 and extended each year after). Access for climbing can be arranged by calling the Beacon Hill Ranger team 24 hour prior to a visit and between 8am and 8pm on 07850 276224. If the duty ranger is unavailable please call the LCC out of hours helpdesk on 0116 3055000.

One person can arrange for a group visit providing they inform the ranger of the number of climbers visiting. Access will be via a gate locked with a combination lock and you must speak to a ranger to gain permission and the access code before visiting and leaving a voicemail is not sufficient. In addition, the following 2024 updated information must be adhered to in order to ensure continued access for climbing:

  • Access onto Jewels Hill, and the rocks found within, will be restricted between April 1st and August 1st in order to conserve and enhance the on-going Heathland restoration works.
  • Permissible access for the purpose of rock climbing can be obtained by calling the Country Parks Help Desk (0116 305 5000) between 0800 and 2000 24 hours prior to your visit.
  • Please also inform the team of your expected length of stay and number of climbers.
  • Access will be via a gate locked with a combination lock.
  • Climbers must only use Jewels Hill for the purpose of climbing, carefully walking the shortest route between the access gate and the rocks. Specific instructions will be given as required.
  • The ranger team would be grateful for any animal sightings seen within the area, particularly reptiles and birds. Please report these to chris.conway@leics.gov.uk
  • LCC reserves the right to restrict access at any time in order to protect flora or fauna as deemed necessary.
  • Periodically livestock will be turned out in the area for the purpose of conservation grazing.
  • Climbers must not allow access to others during their time within Jewels Hill.

Lovely crag, but a bit 'public' - loads of families and dog-walkers. OPR would have called it a crag for poseurs! http://www.leicesterclimbs.f9.co.uk/BeaconI.htm
