COVID-19

As the Covid-19 lockdown eases, access for climbing is opening back up, subject to some measures and restrictions depending on where you are going. Please make sure you have read and understood our current advice before heading out and apply it alongside RAD advice to ensure access issues don’t develop.

Yarncliffe Quarry

Eastern Gritstone

Good beginner's crag and popular instructional site. However, it is slow to dry and is plagued by ants.

Crag information
Climbing Area: Peak District Rock Type: Gritstone
Importance: Local CRoW Land: No

Climbers are asked to not walk on the geojute matting which the BMC has installed to address the crag-top soil erosion - see on-site signing.

Parking and Approach

There are now double yellow lines across the layby & restrictions are actively enforced (fines £100). Parking in the layby is reduced but still possible if well off the highway. Do not block access gates to the house or quarry. If the layby is full, park in the marked area on B6521 or at Longshaw or Surprise View (15min walk).

Group Advice

The crag is very popular with groups and the following guidelines have been developed by DARE (Derbyshire Association of Outdoor Providers) and approved by National Trust to help address problems of overuse and ground erosion: Main recomendations: 1. No double parking in the lay-by 2. Only two groups at any one time 3. No abseiling over popular climbs For more information please contact Steve Brodie (DARE) Tel. No. (01433) 651594. All group leaders should familiarise themselves with BMC Green Guide for Groups of Climbers.
