Selection and Profiling for the GB National Development Squad 2020

Posted by Lucinda Whittaker on 01/10/2019

Young and psyched? Take your climbing to the next level: the GB National Development Squad was established in 2017 to provide a pathway for talented young climbers to propel their performance from national to international competition levels. Find out more here:

With the aim to develop young climbers on the talent pathway into well-rounded athletes and people that are well-equipped to take on international competition and the wider world of rock climbing with all the elements it entails, all whilst ensuring long-term enjoyment and participation within the sport, the GB National Development Squad is a great way for an athlete to further their climbing with advice and supervision from the BMC's experienced and knowledgable coaching team.

As published in July the GB National Development Squad selection 2020 and profiling event is going to be held on 9 November 2019 at The Depot, Sheffield and 10 November 2019 at Awesome Walls, Sheffield. Entrants will be required to attend both days.

If you are are an athlete who has competed for GB Climbing internationally and achieved 2020 selection criteria you will still need to attend the selection event so that technical and tactical profiling can take place from the video recordings taken at the event.

If you are an athlete who has already achieved the criteria, are an existing squad member or an athlete who has achieved a top five result in one of the listed national competitions, you must register for the event here.

Please note, deadline for registration is 5pm on Monday 4 November 2019. It is the athletes' or parents' responsibility to ensure they meet the registration deadline. Registration to the event will not be accepted after the deadline.

For further details about the selection process and how the profiling and selection event will operate, please read the GB National Development Squad Selection Policy via the link below.

The category allocations for 2020 are detailed in the GB National Development Squad selection policy and there are athletes who are already selected for the 2020 squad based on their international performances and the National Youth Rankings system. The remaining places in each category available at the selection event will be published on 22 October 2019 at 5pm.

Alongside profiling, the results from the event will set the field factor value for the BMC National Rankings System for 2020, which will mean athletes who attend will get a great start to the 2020 season as well as a technical and tactical profile feedback report and climbing film.

Athletes who are successful in being selected for the GB National Development Squad 2020 will then be required to attend physical profiling days before the squad events begin in 2020. The dates for these are as follows:

16  November – Junior

17 November – Youth B

23 November – Youth A

24 November – Youth C

Last year, blind climber Jesse Dufton led every pitch of the classic East Face Route (E1 5b) on the Old Man of Hoy, placing all his own gear. Renowned adventure filmmaker Alastair Lee made a cracking film, supported by Montane and BMC TV, based around the ascent, which has been scooping up awards and is, amazingly for a climbing film, going to be shown on British telly. To top off the good news story, Jesse has just won a BMC Volunteer Award.
