Ever heard of Hutton Roof? BMC Area Youth Coordinator (AYC) for Yorkshire Area, Anne Chevalier, organised an informal gathering for parents and children there over the weekend of 4th and 5th July. This is Anne's report of the event.
Report from Anne Chevalier
This was an informal event for young people and their parents who have their own equipment and have experience of climbing and wanted to visit a new area or meet other people in a similar situation, make new contacts or maybe just wanted to go to Hutton Roof and meet other families.
To me, Hutton Roof is a great place to take children and young climbers. It has very easy access, a perfect place to have a picnic and has many short routes. So it's very family friendly.
The start of the weekend was not too promising. The weather was initially unstable with heavy stormy showers. However, we managed to set our tents up in dry conditions. Two families camped on Friday night and a third camped on Saturday night.
On Saturday we woke up to fine weather with sunshine and we set off to the crag at about 10.00. We climbed routes ranging from V Diff to VS and everybody enjoyed the experience and the sunbathing session before returning to the campsite at about 4.30. Some of us decided to go to the local supermarket in Kirby Lonsdale to buy some cold beer and more food for the evening BBQ. That's when the heavens opened and we had to wait in cars and tents for the storm to pass before proceeding with our evening feast.
On Sunday it was agreed to have a short day and get home in reasonable time to unpack before getting ready for work and school. We decided to walk along the river in Kirby and finished the day with a well deserved ice-cream.
Overall it was a great weekend and we are all keen to repeat it. I'll keep everyone posted on the next event.
