The 2008 Nick Estcourt Award of £1500 has been awarded to the UK-Canadian Distaghil Sar Expedition led by Dr Bruce Normand.
The objective is to climb a First Ascent of the North Ridge of Distaghil Sar, 7883m. in the Hispar Range of the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan. The mountain has not been climbed from the north and will be attempted in alpine style.
This is an exciting undertaking and the Nick Estcourt Award Trustees are pleased to offer them support. The Award is allocated annually and is in the region of £1500-2000. Closing date for all applications is 31 December.
The expedition has also applied for MEF/BMC support. The BMC international committee meets on 13 March to decide on which expeditions will receive the last of the UK Sport grants allocated by the BMC following withdrawal of sponsorship by UK Sport in order to channel funding into the Olympics. The BMC is currently exploring avenues in order to be able to continue supporting international expeditions.
