'TIMBER...' at Back Bowden

The Northumbrian Mountaineering Club recently organised a BMC funded tree felling session at one of the NE's finest crags.

The large stand of conifers was shading the North Wall and rendering some the crags finest (and hardest) routes unclimable. So, accompanied by a symphony of revving chainsaws Andy Cowley, Jon Hoffman and Dave Laverick set about clearing the area.

After a day of hard graft the area was transformed and the rock is already improving. So, no excuses for not getting on County Ethics or The Dark Side now…

Many thanks to Richard Pow (NMC and BMC local access rep.) for coordinating this sterling effort, the landowner for agreeing to the work, and finally to the lads with the saws.

Climbing, walking & ash dieback: what do you need to know?

Many of the landscapes we visit and value as climbers and walkers are dominated by ash woodland, but a fungal disease – ash dieback – is expected to decimate the population of these trees across Britain. Not only might the landscape change dramatically, but also the rapid decay in affected trees can make them dangerous to anyone walking underneath, not to mention climbers who might have up until now relied on ash trees for runners or belays. This could be a new type of objective danger to many of us, but what do we need to know and how can you assess the risk?
