On 5 November 2011, BMC member Becky Bellworthy from Romsey became the youngest female to reach the summit of Baruntse, a mountain standing at 7,129 metres in the Everest Solukhumbu region of Nepal.
The climb was part of 18 year old Becky's preparation for an ascent of Everest in April-May 2011 with Kenton Cool, where she hopes to become the youngest British female to summit.
Becky said: “Climbing Baruntse was the best experience of my life. I loved living in a tent, but I was glad to get back home by the end of it. It was the best mountain that I’ve climbed so far and easier than when I climbed Mount Blanc."
Becky is currently raising sponsorship for her Everest climb. In the future she would like to work on Everest as a high-altitude doctor and will be going to study medicine at the University of Southampton next September.
