HSE Meets Adventure Activities Sector to discuss Working at Height

Posted by on 13/04/2004

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) met with representatives of the Adventure Activities Sector on the 31st March to discuss the draft Work at Height Regulations.

Attendees included Dave Turnbull - British Mountaineering Council, John Cousins -Mountain Leader Training UK, Tom Redfern - Association of Caving Instructors, and Marcus Baillie- Adventure Activities Licensing Authority. During the productive meeting the key areas of concern - ropes, fragile surfaces, danger areas, lone workers, National Governing Bodies guidance and guidance on the regulations -were discussed. HSE recognises that the Adventure Activities sector has a very good safety record, and already has exemplary safety standards and guidance. Adherence to those standards should mean the sector will not have problems fulfilling the requirements of the draft Regulations. HSE has received almost 500 responses to the consultation exercise that closes for comment on Friday 2 April 2004. The next step is to review the comments and take forward any necessary amendments to the draft Regulations. Discussions with the adventure activities representatives will continue during this process. At this time, HSE envisages having new Work at Height Regulations on the statute book by the end of the year. View Latest Position Paper by HSE
