Joss Lynam: 1924-2011

Posted by Tony Ryan on 10/01/2011
By kind permission of Colm Wright

Joss Lynam, considered by many to be the ‘Father of Irish Mountaineering’ has passed away after a short illness.

He devoted most of his life to developing the sport in Ireland and his contribution to Irish mountaineering as a leader and a representative is unmatched.

In the 1940s he was a founding member of the Irish Mountaineering Club, and was the club’s President in the 1980s. He particapted in and led many international expeditions, and during the 1990s he was the President of the UIAA Expedition Commission.

Closer to home he was involved in the development of the Association of Adventure Sports, conducted numerous access negotiations with landowners, and wrote many guidebooks to hill walking and mountaineering in Ireland. He was for many years Editor of the Irish Mountain Log, the magazine of Mountaineering Ireland.

Joss was also a keen orienteer, and was one of the founders of Irish orienteering in the 1960s.
