If you're planning a mountain-based expedition for next year you may wish to apply for the Nick Estcourt Award.

Although the deadline for next year's award is still 5 months away (31 December 2009) you may be ultra organised and want to get your application in early. Applications are invited from expeditions attempting an objective of considerable mountaineering significance.

Nick Estcourt was killed in an avalanche on K2 whilst taking part in the 1978 attempt to climb the West Ridge. The Nick Estcourt Award was established to commemorate his climbing achievements and to encourage future generations of expedition mountaineers. One grant is made each year to expeditions which the Trustees consider most likely to further expedition mountaineering. As only one grant is made each year, the award carries much prestige and is a strong endorsement of the successful applicants.

This 2008 award of £1500 went to Andy Housman & Nick Bullock for their British Chang Himal North Face Expedition.  They will set out in mid September to attempt to make the first ascent of the 1500m mixed North Face of Chang Himal, 6500m in the Kangchenjunga region of the Nepali Hmalaya.
