How to: Access Wintour's Leap and Woodcroft Quarry

Posted by Rob Dyer on 21/03/2018

As a result of issues with antisocial behaviour, a gate has been installed in the fence at the top of Woodcroft Quarry and the holes in the fence repaired.

The gate requires a code to enter and the current code for the lock is 8952 - any changes to the code will be listed here.

The gate has been installed due to issues with anti-social behaviour at Woodcroft Quarry and Fly Wall so it is crucial that climbers ensure they close the gate when entering or leaving and don't pass the code on to non-climbers. This article has been created as when the code was previously listed directly on the RAD page for Wintours Leap, the page came up as a top hit when searching for 'Woodcroft Quarry code', meaning it was too easy from non-climbers to find it and gain access.

Alternative access routes which provide more convenient access to other areas of Wintour's Leap are the 'Easy Way Down' (a scramble down between Central and South Bay) or by following the path through the woods from the parking area on Lancaut Lane towards Lancaut, then cutting back SE to Sty James Church and following the river downstream to the northern end of the crag.

Went to Woodcroft Quarry/Fly Wall on 20/10/2019. The lock is not working properly.
We managed to get in by 'blind punching' the code on the 'inside' side of the keypad, and then turning the lock handle from the 'outside' side, as suggested by a very kind guy we met there (I think he was part of a group doing some kind of training on the fly wall). Same procedure to get out.

Visited the crag today 29th Oct. The lock was not working on the exit side. This is only going to encourage jumping the fence again.
