MPs showcase bouldering as a fun and healthy family activity

BMC President Rehan Siddiqui along with his family hosted a bouldering session for two North West MPs along with their families at the new Depot Bouldering Centre in Manchester.

The purpose was to raise awareness of the health and well-being of participating in climbing in general and what a great family activity bouldering is.

David Rutley MP (Macclesfield) and Graham Evans MP (Weaver Vale) have got the climbing bug!  Having abseiled with the BMC in August they moved on to enjoy a bouldering taster session with their families at the new Depot bouldering wall in Trafford Park, Manchester, on Saturday 30 January.

The families were shown the ropes (or in the case of bouldering no ropes) by instructors at the Depot.

Graham Evans MP said: “Since trying abseiling at Helsby with my son, we’ve been keen to get more involved in climbing, and bouldering seemed like a really great starting place. We're excited by our visit to the new Depot and hope to progress to outside climbing very soon.”

Getting younger children active is a key focus of the Government’s new sport strategy ‘Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation’. Investment is to start from five years old and there is a shift away from funding elite sport to supporting more general fitness and outdoor recreation. Funding will also be targeted at groups who have low participation rates to encourage those who do not take part in sport and physical activity to get involved.

David Rutley MP, co-Chair of the Mountaineering All-Party Parliamentary Group, said, “Climbing and bouldering walls are an exciting alternative to going to the gym. They are also great ways to encourage more people to find new ways to keep more physically active. This is a clear priority in improving the nation’s health and integral to the Government’s new sport strategy. I hope that more people will take the opportunity to try bouldering at venues like the Depot and explore different approaches to keeping fit and healthy.”

Thanks are given to The Depot Climbing Centre, Manchester.  This is a new state-of-the-art bouldering centre in Trafford Park which opened in December 2015. It is one of the largest centres in the world, with an overall area in excess of 30,000 sq ft.

The facility hosts bouldering circuits, the UK’s premier competition wall and offers cutting edge training facilities.  Younger climbers will be spoilt for choice as an extensive area has been developed for them to hone their skill, plus a Depot kids club is already up and running and has proved extremely popular at the other Depot walls in Leeds and Nottingham.

Most indoor bouldering walls offer beginner classes for little ones from around aged five as well as for parents and adults.
