Petzl Nomic & Ergo ice tools: Information & Advice

Nomics and Ergos - Griprest problem

Petzl has announced free repairs if needed of the new 2010 models of Nomic and Ergo ice tools, after problems were discovered with the Griprest handles. The adjustment mechanism of the Griprest can become damaged in use, causing it to become loose. This is not a safety issue. New and old style Quarks, and old style Nomics and Ergos are not affected.

Owners of new Nomic and Ergo tools should return them to the point of purchase for a temporary repair, which is aimed at tiding users over for the winter season. Re-engineered tools will become available later in the year for warranty replacements.

For more information, see the information release on their UK & Ireland distributors website Lyon Equipment

This includes advice regarding not using the Griprest as a temporary belay point, or using it to take cheeky rests on lead. The Griprest can be easily damaged using these practices, which should be avoided.
