What’s New

Surrounding the Lake District are the crags of the Eden Valley & South Lakes Limestone. A major attraction of the limestone and sandstone crags and quarries described in this guide is that their climbs may often remain dry when those in the National Park are not. Important crags described include Chapel Head Scar and Armathwaite, but numerous lesser known crags also give plenty of scope within easy reach of the Lakes, ideal venues to save a wet day or as evening crags for locals.

Described as ‘the ultimate guide to Mont Blanc crack climbs’, Mont Blanc Super Cracks is an English language guidebook in full colour with easy to follow topos and route descriptions as well as approach information. Bow Valley Sport is a new guide to Canada’s premier summer sport climbing destination, and covers cliffs around Banff, Canmore and Lake Louise. The full-colour guidebook includes information on all of the newest crags, as well as valuable travelling information for climbers coming from abroad. Incredible color photography, detailed maps, and accurate information define Colorado Bouldering: Front Range. This best-ever bouldering guide provides information on nearly 1800 problems from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, including such legendary areas as Horsetooth, Flagstaff and the Garden of the Gods. South Platte Climbing: the Northern Volume is the first of a two part series to one of the oldest climbing areas in Colorado and covers everything from Conifer to Buffalo Creek. Of the 3,000 routes in the South Platte, 1,600 of them are described in this volume, from 30ft clip-ups to 1,300ft multi-pitch epics.

For the energetic, River Manifold Walks offers a 23-mile linear walk from the river’s source in the high and remote moorlands of Flash to the popular and picturesque location of Ilam and Dovedale, where the Manifold becomes a tributary of the River Dove. Devotees of circular walks will find 12 carefully described routes, all accompanied by maps, photographs and interesting facts. Walking in the South Wales Valleys offers a selection of contrasting routes across the region through valleys, over ridges and along the coastline, to delight any walker. Full of superb walking opportunities at every turn, the Valleys offer a surprising level of variety crammed into a compact and easily accessible area. Its rich history is highlighted by Iron Age forts, Celtic churches and Norman castles, while the walks in the book often follow the ancient tracks, Roman roads and old packhorse trails that cross the region and are still in use to this day. The 30 day routes described in Walking on Gower cover lesser-known areas in all corners of this popular South Wales holiday destination, suitable for a wide range of walkers. The whole peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is famous for its spectacular coastline and unspoilt beaches but the inland hills and ridges are also rich in wildlife, striking geology and archaeological and historical sites. Think the Munros are too difficult?  Think again. Volume 2 of Baffie’s Easy Munro Guide covers the Central Highlands, including Ben Nevis and Glen Coe. Twenty-five routes, each covering one main Munro, all with detailed maps and full colour throughout – this lightly humorous and opinionated book will tell you everything you need to reach the summit.

Written by one of the best known navigation instructors in the UK, Navigation in the Mountains is the definitive and comprehensive ‘how to navigate textbook’. It covers every aspect of mountain navigation; summer, winter and overseas, using traditional map and compass as well as devices such as GPS and digital software applications. The official navigation book for all mountain training schemes.

White Peak is the latest map in the award-winning British Mountain Map series. Printed on polyethylene - durable, tear-resistant and waterproof. The 1:40,000 scale provides clear, detailed information, showing all the features required for accurate navigation. Africa: the Highest Peaks is a great new trekking map for the most popular of the continent’s peaks: Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori Mountains. The laminated map is made up of a series of area and summit maps of differing scales, and a patented map joining technique enables easy adjustment to your choice of layout.

Fans of sport and travel writing will enjoy Cricket on Everest, which starts with an idea over a pint of beer and ends with a world record at 5,165 metres above sea level. In 2009, 50 people from the UK, many of whom had never met until a year earlier, played the highest ever game of cricket on the slopes of the world’s tallest mountain.

Colin Prior is a renowned landscape photographer, and he’s often first off the mark with his wonderful calendars.  We’ve got three of the 2013 range in the shop for those of you who like to plan ahead.

Walking Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail is a guide to probably the most popular middle distance walk in Northwest England - the trail runs for 55km along Cheshire's central sandstone ridge between Frodsham and Whitchurch; with easy-to-follow route descriptions (in both directions), large scale OS mapping, and details of interesting sights to see on the way.

A revised and updated 2nd edition of The Inn Way... to the Peak District charts a 6-day circular walk, covering 84 miles and passing 51 great country pubs along the way. Never has a guidebook tick list been so much fun!

Lleyn Peninsula is the latest guidebook in the Top Ten Walks series, and covers the finest routes along a section of the Wales Coast Path, in a popular pocketable format. With clear information, an overview and introduction for each walk, expertly written numbered directions, large scale Ordnance Survey maps, and eye-grabbing panoramic photographs, these guides set a new standard in clarity and ease-of-use.

Hot on the heels of Over The Moors comes another BMC guidebook. Cheshire & Merseyside Sandstone provides the local lowdown on these near-mythical crags, from the heights of Helsby to the pits of Pex, from Frogsmouth sport to Frodsham solos; it’s all here in the new definitive guide, due out in September.

Echoes is the story of Nick Bullock’s journey of discovery, which takes him from the confines of life as a prison officer in a maximum-security jail to a new found sense of freedom in a life devoted to the mountains. Echoes is a powerful and compelling exploration of what it means to live life on your own terms.
