Eagle Tor - Access News

Posted by BMC on 27/05/2002

Please note the following important details of approaches to be used for Eagle Tor, near Cratcliffe Edge.

Please use only the two approaches given below to access Eagle Tor. Although a footpath runs round the foot of the tor, the rocks themselves are on land owned by Mrs Forrest of Rockingstone Farm, she is content for bouldering to continue (and says that climbers are well-mannered and do not leave litter). From Cratcliffe side, use the approach up the path to the ruin, then through the two gaps in the fence, as at present. From the Druid Inn, Birchover direction – follow the track to the gate with the ‘Rockingstone Farm’ sign attached. Then turn left up the signposted footpath heading up the grassy bank till you reach the white gravelled track. THEN TURN RIGHT AND HEAD DOWN THIS TRACK FOR 40 METRES UNTIL A SMALL PATH (BELOW A WALL) RUNS UP THE HILL TO A GATE LEADING ONTO THE TOR.

The reason – Mrs Forrest has a dog that gets very agitated by bouldering mats being carried, these approaches avoid the path past the farmhouse (and dog!). Mrs Forrest does bed and breakfast, so if you’re coming from afar to climb in the Cratcliffe area, you could consider giving her a call on 01629 650356. Mrs Forrest is also interested in having certain trees cleared from the land, this will give better access to the boulders for us and help her enjoy walking there. Any tree surgeons out there who fancy helping out - please get in touch with the BMC or directly with Mrs Forrest. If climbers stick to these approaches and show good conduct, there should be no problems with access.
