Hills 2 Oceans

Help remove mountains of waste from the places we love

The BMC Hills 2 Oceans litter picking campaign aims to encourage our members to pick up litter from crags and hillsides when they're out.

There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. If no action is taken, this figure will treble within the next ten years. 80% of litter in the seas comes from inland. Plastic bottles, crisp packets, cigarette packs and cans will end up in our oceans unless we do something about it. Here's how you can help:

Join or organise an event

As well as picking up as rubbish when you’re out and about, you might want to join an organised litter pick to target a local area that needs a good clean, and meet like-minded people while you do. Keep Britain TidyTrash Free Trails and YHA plan litter picks around the country.

If you’d like to organise your own H2O clean up the BMC can help by providing information on how to arrange a successful event in our H2O Resource Pack and H2O Risk Assessment Template.

Don't forget to share your rubbish stories in our dedicated H2O Facebook Group.

Help remove mountains of waste when you visit a YHA Hostel

We're excited be working alongside YHA to launch over 50 Hills 2 Oceans litter picking hubs at some of their key hostels across England and Wales, to encourage the hill walking and climbing community to help remove mountains of waste.

The kits provide micro-volunteering litter picking opportunities to YHA residents across the country, and YHA will even responsibly dispose of the litter for you! BMC Litter Picking Kits are available to reserve and collect at participating YHA hostels. Reserve a kit via the YHA Volunteer website.

The YHA participating hostels include:

  • YHA Ambleside
  • YHA Berwick
  • YHA Borrowdale
  • YHA Keswick
  • YHA Coniston Holly How
  • YHA New Forest
  • YHA National Forest
  • YHA Castleton Losehill Hall
