BMC Christmas Message: 80 Years & Beyond!

Dear Member,  In 1944, Geoffrey Winthrop-Young, President of the Alpine Club, brought about a motion to create the BMC, a representative body to represent and speak on behalf of all climbers in Britain. As we turn the corner on our 80th year it’s important to remember our history and the vision of our founding member clubs as we look to what better looks like for the BMC in 2025.

GB National and Regional Squads

The England National and Regional Squad system offers a programme of activity for selected athletes from England, Wales and Northern Ireland which supports the athlete in developing their performance standards and styles through the key areas of technical, tactical, physical, psychological, nutrition and lifestyle, whilst maintaining the GB Climbing core values of Health, Performance and Respect.

Anti-doping

All athletes have the right to compete in sport knowing that they, and their competitors, are clean. The BMC believes in clean competition climbing and works in partnership with UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and our International Federation (IFSC) to ensure that the integrity of our sport is protected and prevent doping. The use of performance-enhancing drugs and other doping behaviour severely damages the legitimacy of sport and undermines the integrity of clean athletes.

As a developing national team the GB Climbing Team is managed within a finite funding envelope and as such we are not able to provide support to athletes at all events throughout the season. We are grateful for the support of our partners which enables us to do more for our climbers at more events.

Other ways the climbers and team can be supported is through individual donations, which we also receive.
