YHA Festival of Walking | The Sill, Hadrian's Wall Social Walk
Join a social walk. The YHA Festival of Walking's guided social walks offer a safe and supportive space to get involved with walking and meet other walkers.
These walks are free, open to everyone and designed to help you enjoy and explore the outdoors, as well as becoming more confident in your walking ability. The Festival of Walking social walks are divided into three categories:
Skills and confidence – learn new walking skills and techniques from experts so you can step out with more belief and know-how.
Health and wellbeing – boost your physical and mental good health on walks designed for people of all backgrounds and abilities.
Discovery and connection – step out with experienced local guides on walks exploring nature, heritage and culture.
All you need to do is book your free place and look forward to a ramble to remember. What’s more, you’ll get a free cuppa and cake at the finishing point.
Walk Overview
This iconic route follows in the footsteps of the Romans and brings together history, nature and film locations in one walk! There are great views all the way along and while mostly straightforward there is a variety of terrain and some short but sharp ascents.

Distance: 8 miles
Duration: 4 - 5 hours
Led by: Simon Ainley/Andrew McCloy, YHA, with BMC volunteer guides
From the hostel the route heads east alongside the wall via milecastles, Housesteads Fort and Sycamore Gap, then returns on a parallel paths to the north. It’s panoramic and full of interest, using a variety of paths and tracks, some of which may me muddy after rain. The route is undulating with some short but sharp slopes, so a reasonable level of fitness would make the walk more enjoyable.

It's free to sign up for this event. The YHA are encouraging people to make a voluntary donation towards their heart of the community appeal to install life-saving defibrillators at every YHA hostel.
