Eifionydd is an area in North-West Wales stretching from the East of the Llŷn Peninsula all the way to Porthmadog (and maybe a smidge beyond, depends who you ask). The Afon Erch forms its Western border. Moel Hebog, Moel y Gest, Moel Lefn, and Moel yr Ogof, are just a few of the exceptional peaks that are well worth a visit here.

Though often underappreciated, the rugged hills and mountains of Eifionydd, paired with the flat farmland of the reclaimed flatlands of Traeth Mawr, give views and a true geographic contrast that’s unique and incredibly beautiful.

Well-known to climbers thanks to the ever-popular cliffs of Tremadog, there is much to love here for those who prefer to walk, and throughout this interview Gerwyn’s love for the area shines brightly. In it, he also shares why he thinks it’s meaningful for him to share images of the area, paired with Welsh language poetry and verses (translated bilingually for the enjoyment of all). We muse on individual pathways into working in the hills and mountains, and discuss why culture and language feel inseparable from the outdoors. He expresses his views on the importance of an inclusive and representative approach to language in the outdoor industry.

“The fact that the Welsh language is present is important, so that people see it! The language can easily go missing.”

This being the BMC’s first ever Welsh-Language podcast offering (and my first ever effort at the medium), please share with your Welsh-speaking friends and feel free to send feedback/advice/recommendations to me at eben.muse@thebmc.co.uk, I would be most grateful to receive them. It is our hope to increase our output of original Welsh content in the future and hopefully this is a stepping stone in that direction.
