Bus services to a range of mountain locations in Eryri (Snowdonia) are due to expand this summer, after much demand in recent years and chaos during busy periods. The new changes will be in place from the 9th of April and will remain until the end of September.
There will now be buses from Llanberis to Pen y Pass at fifteen-minute intervals, in addition to expanded services from Bangor, Caernarfon, and Porthmadog. This aims to reduce strain on nearby car parks and verges. This will potentially free up some space at smaller car parks for climbers and other recreational users who are not seeking to use popular ‘honey pot’ paths.
Services will be operated by Gwynfor Coaches using accessible low-floor vehicles and will cost £5 for a day ticket (£2.50 for a child), singles are £2 and a return £3, with contactless payment accepted. There is not yet a full map of current services, however the full tables can be found here, and the S (Sherpa) services from the 9th of April can be summed up as follows:
With the first bus running (from Llanberis) at 7:10am and the last bus back at 7:30pm.
The expansion of bus services is timely, after changes to the popular Pen y Pass car park resulted in the installation of a pre-booking only system during busy times of year, with plate recognition cameras installed to combat irresponsible parking. Changes also resulted in a significant increase in prices last year, with an 8-hour booking costing £18, 24 hours costing £25, or £40 for 24 hours via the website justpark.com.
Other options for travel include using the BMC’s newly launched Liftshare site. According to Gwynfor Coaches, bikes are also allowed to be brought on to the buses unless they are too full.
