Not everyone in Lancashire stayed at home on Saturday because of the severe weather warning. Fourteen of us made it through the imposing portals of Hoghton Quarry to begin the process of restoring the place to its former glory.
It was clear from the outset that it would take more than a day to achieve what eventually needs to be done, but this first day was a step in the right direction. Rhododendrons were cleared from around the base of the eponymous buttress, whilst 5 ropes snaked down Hoghton Wall. Cracks were cleaned, ledges uncovered and massive old ring bolts unearthed.
I think that none of the people who were there on Saturday had been to one of our little gatherings before, and they all said that they'd come back again: surely a success in its own right!
The next time we'll be able to get into the quarry will be during the "official" climbing season during June & July. More cleaning will be done then.
