Holmfirth: Not just for middle aged sitcom lovers

A few months ago, someone covered the Fontainbleau of West Yorkshire in thick black paint. This was pretty cheeky, and predictably upset a lot of people.

However, all was not lost. Guy Keating, Martin Kocsis and a team of locals descended upon the local council in all manner of guises..some official, some not. The upshot is that Cliff is 95% paint free and we are going to finish the job the council started. This means that you are cordially invited to our clean-up on Sunday 13th July at the crag. We will start from 10am, and will have a long list of jobs for you to get stuck into. The usual clean-up rules apply: bring old clothes, any gardening equipment you think useful and some gear to hang off the top of the crag to clean the top outs. We aim to remove litter, brambles, vegetation in the cracks, and to trim back some of the trees to get more light to the rock. We will also be able to supply an assortment of tools to accomplish the task if you haven't got any of your own.

There will be a BBQ at the end of the day if the weather holds out (bring your own beer) and there will be free brews and cakes throughout the day. Beers in The Nook afterwards, as per normal.

Many of the landscapes we visit and value as climbers and walkers are dominated by ash woodland, but a fungal disease – ash dieback – is expected to decimate the population of these trees across Britain. Not only might the landscape change dramatically, but also the rapid decay in affected trees can make them dangerous to anyone walking underneath, not to mention climbers who might have up until now relied on ash trees for runners or belays. This could be a new type of objective danger to many of us, but what do we need to know and how can you assess the risk?
