Technical Advising in Accessible Activities

Posted by James Mchaffie on 30/06/2021

Accessible climbing and walking technical advice group formed to aid the growth of knowledge and skills in these activities and promote a common good standard of practice across the industry. Read more below:

A small group of Technical Advisors who are members of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI) and have completed a Technical Advisors workshop through the AMI CPD provision have been drawn together to provide a point for advice on technical areas of work in accessible climbing and walking. Knowledge and skills in this area are constantly growing but it was felt that advice around technical areas could be strengthened further. The group members hold a lot of knowledge in advising but also hold a great deal of knowledge about accessible activities.

Examples of areas that can be advised on are site specific training, systems for delivery of accessible activities, technical questions around equipment used, risk assessments and NGB delivery. This advice is available to anybody whether a participant or a person running a facility.

Importantly this will not be an exclusive group of people and it is certainly not the long-term view for advice to continue to come from this point. The hope is that more Technical Advisors will reach a point where they can offer a broad range of advice on access, but for the mean time this group will support the process.

The representative bodies BMC, MT, AMI and ABC have been supporting of the process and are very keen to encourage a common good standard of practice across the industry supporting both a safe and good quality experience. The representative bodies are also increasingly drawing on the knowledge of the BMC Equity Steering Group which has recently shown a steep rise in strength with subgroups on specialist areas evolving such as Women, Mental Health, Disability, LGBTQ and Ethnic Minorities.
