Tom Greenall to step down as Head Coach (Olympic), GB Climbing

Posted by Gregg Cropper on 15/01/2024

The BMC has today announced that Tom Greenall will step down from his role as Head Coach (Olympic), GB Climbing.

Tom will leave his role on 7 April 2024. With continuity paramount, we will ensure this does not adversely affect the preparation of climbers for the 2024 Season and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Athlete planning is already in place with the excellent personal coaches and the GB coaching team all working together to deliver these plans as we move through the up-and-coming season.

These measures are aimed at ensuring minimal disruption and continued support for the athletes.

With newly appointed CEO, Paul Ratcliffe, commencing his role in February, decisions regarding the replacement for Tom will be made after Paul takes up his position.

Tom has been Head Coach for the past four and a half years over which time the performance programme has seen significant change and development. During his time, GB Climbing secured World Championship, European Championship and World Cup/European Cup medals.

He led the GB Climbing department through the COVID pandemic and has been instrumental in the development of our performance understanding of the sport, enhancing the pathway for athlete progression within the team and working with UK Sport to help drive forward towards GB Climbing’s long-term ambitions.

Commenting on his decision to leave the role, Greenall said:

“It has been a real privilege to have held the position for the past 4 years and an honour to work with so many talented athletes, coaches, and staff.

"We have made significant progress in recent years, and I now feel the time is right for me to step down and create space to take the programme and team on further.

"I will be excited to watch Toby (and hopefully others) in the Paris Games this summer as well as more GBC athletes on the world stage in coming years.

"Huge thanks to all those who’ve supported me during my time as Head Coach and I wish the team of athletes, coaches, and staff all the best for the upcoming season and beyond.”

Lorraine Brown, GB Climbing Head of Performance commented:

“Tom has been a key member of the GB Climbing department, developing coaching staff and processes over a significant time of transition, and we thank him for his dedication to our sport.

"His coaching has left an indelible mark on GB Climbing. He leaves behind a strong foundation for us to build upon and we wish him all the best.”

I love the comment 'athlete planning is already in place'. Not according to several athletes and the letter they signed!
