Volunteer Belayer
Purpose of this role
Belayers are responsible for the safety of the athlete, while climbing. They are also needed to ensure that they do not give an advantage or disadvantage to the athlete through there belaying.
Key tasks and responsibilities of the role
- Ensure they are familiar with the competition rules for the event they are belaying at
- To belay each athlete in a fair, safe and consistent manner
- To ensure the athlete is correctly tied in and their harness is correctly done up
- Responsible for own harness and belay device
More information about the role
- Ideal has a Mountain training climbing qualification – the recommended level for lead belaying is RCDI or CWDI
- Has experience in lead belaying or bottom rope belaying depending on which role volunteering for
- Ideal has competition belaying experience
- Professionalism
At climbing competition and benchmarking events run by the BMC.
Minimum to able to commit to a morning or afternoon at a single event.
