The BMC offer a series of courses and workshops for coaches and climbers, ranging from essential movement skills to supporting mental health.

BMC members receive a discount on course bookings as a membership benefit.

Find a Provider

The BMC have a team of providers covering England and Wales, with Plas Y Brenin (the National Outdoor Centre) also acting as a provider based in North Wales. Courses in Scotland and Ireland are delivered by Mountaineering Scotland and Mountaineering Ireland respectively.

Booking a Course

Places can be booked on publicly listed courses found through the Mountain Training course portal which is also in the booking links in the individual workshop descriptions below. Use the filter on the Mountain Training course portal to select your course type to see the upcoming public courses.

Private and Bespoke Courses

Providers also offer private bookings which are ideal for managers needing to train their staff. Bookings can be made for groups of staff and bespoke courses such as Fundamentals 1 followed by Fundamentals 2 on consecutive days can also be provided. For private bookings or other enquiries about courses in your region, contact a Provider directly using the map and contact details.

Mountain Training Coaching Scheme

NICAS Delivery

Fundamentals 1, 2 and 3 can be used to meet the requirements to deliver NICAS Climbing and Bouldering. Find out more about the minimum requirements here:

Workshops available

FUNdamentals of Climbing 1

The one-day FUNdamentals of Climbing 1 course focuses on the important themes that underpin climbing movement and good technique is part of the training for the Foundation Coach qualification.

FUNdamentals of Climbing 2

The FUNdamentals of Climbing 2 course builds upon the first workshop, looking at how specific techniques can be coached and is part of the training for the Development Coach Award.

Prior attendance of a FUNdamentals of Climbing Workshop 1 is required for this workshop.

FUNdamentals of Climbing 3

This workshop would be appropriate CPD for coaches working with talented climbers and coaches progressing through Mountain Training's coaching scheme. This course will look at what happens to body positioning and movement when hand and footholds become worse, the angle steepens and dynamic movement is employed.

Prior attendance of the FUNdamentals of Climbing Workshops 1 & 2 is required for this workshop.

Physical Training for Climbing 1

This workshop is for any climber or coach wishing to further their knowledge of physical training. At the end of the day you will be able to plan training sessions for your clients and groups.

Participants need be a competent lead belayer and climb 6a comfortably to get the most out of the Physical Training 1 workshop.

Physical Training for Climbing 2

This course explores appropriate (and inappropriate) training methods, the training methods and design of customisable training programmes and the physiology of climbing. As well as learning about sports nutrition for climbers and methods of analysing the current and potential physical performance.

Participants need have attended a Physical Training 1 workshop and be a competent lead belayer and climb 6a comfortably to get the most out of this two-day workshop.

Coaching Children

Maximize the impact of your coaching sessions where young climbers are motivated to learn through fun, enjoyment and challenge. This workshop also aims to provide coaches with a clear framework of safe practice in the introduction of basic physical training for young people to support their climbing.

Route Setting for Coaching

The BMC Route Setting for Coaching workshop is for anyone route setting or wishes to route set at climbing walls. Anyone who does some coaching and wants to improve their route setting ability in developing technical climbing problems will benefit from the workshop. Participants need to be able to onsight 6b and boulder up to V3 comfortably.

Climb4WellBeing Workshop for Coaches

Are you a coach or instructor who would like to learn how to help climbers who may need some support with their mental health in order to access the fantastic wellbeing benefits of climbing? The Climb4WellBeing workshop could be just what you need.
