Local Area Members Council Rep
What does a BMC members council rep do?
A BMC members council rep is the voice of the members in your local area and the members council. They report both ways in an unbiased and neutral way and support the members council in delivering its objectives.
Members council is the main conduit by which information is passed between the board of directors and members and provides the mechanism by which this information can be discussed and debated.
There are normally two elected people from each area to be the Members council rep.
Key tasks and responsibilities of the role
- Attend member councils’(MC) main meetings (4 a year)
- Attend local area meetings (4-5 a year)
- Engage with members and all parts of the BMC
- Consult with your local area to report on local issues to MC
- Provide a verbal or written report to area members on all relevant MC/Board activities

- Good communication & listening skills, diplomacy and the ability to be unbiased when representing the views of the local area
- Knowledge of area issues
- In person and virtual council meetings. At home.
- The tenure for this role is 3 years but there are no restrictions on stepping down early.
- There is no minimum commitment but as the local area rep it would be recommended that you are able to attend the four main member council meetings a year plus your local area meetings, along with having the time to read paperwork and emails relevant to discussions at MC.
- BMC staff support on complex or difficult issues
- Expenses –travel expenses for any meetings attended in person
- Training as requested if required in the role
- Contributing to the membership’s voices being heard
- Giving back to the climbing and hill walking community
- Developing your skills and knowledge
- Insight into how the BMC works
