Travel

Hope village is served by buses (there is a stop adjacent to the start-point car park) and trains. Hope train station is 1.2km east of the village, a short walk along the main road from the village. For more information Plan Your Journey | Traveline

If you travel by car then you might just find a space in the start-point car park if you’re lucky and arrive very early (£6.80 for up to 10 hours at the machine that accepts cash and cards or use PayByPhone app. which applies an additional charge), otherwise there is roadside parking to be found around the village (please park only where permitted and courteously so as not to cause obstruction).

Consider lift sharing, see the BMC Liftshare site: BMC Community Liftshare site

Intended route

We'll leave Hope to walk initially alongside the River Noe to Edale End, then entering the lower reaches of Jagger’s Clough before climbing to Hope Cross and the gradual broad ridge walk over Hope Brinks to reach the summit of Win Hill before descending to Aston and finally back to Hope..

The route (if conditions allow, we may change to something else if conditions are not suitable) is mostly on stoney and earth paths, sometimes rough and rocky, sometimes, muddy, leaf strewn with tree roots, sometimes a little boggy with a little off-path moorland terrain.  There are stiles to climb over in places and there may be farm animals encountered on occasion. There are some long gradual ascents, a few steep sections and some steep and gradual descents.  There is some very mild exposure near the high point.

Who can come

To sign-up you’ll find a link to Eventbrite lower down under the heading sign-up.

This walk is open to BMC members, accompanying friends or anyone who has an interest in the work of the BMC.  Under 18s are welcome, but strictly only if in the company of a parent or legal guardian who will take responsibility for them throughout.

Dogs are NOT permitted on this walk (we love dogs, but this route uses some Open Access land where the landowner has exercised their right to exclude all except guide, hearing or assistance dogs).

Please DO NOT attend this walk if:

  • you have any of the recognised symptoms of respiratory infections including COVID-19;
  • you have been diagnosed recently with, or suspect that you are presently suffering from, COVID-19.

It is essential (in order to manage numbers) that you let us know you're coming (and whether you might be bringing a dog), see Eventbrite sign-up details below. It is a BMC requirement that we have the names and contact telephone numbers for all participants.

Further information

What to bring

Participants will be expected to wear supportive walking boots/shoes with grippy soles and to wear or carry highly weather resistant clothing (including gloves and headwear) suitable for the conditions prevailing on the day (remember it can be substantially colder up high than it is in the valley) which could be anywhere between hot and sunny (meaning sun hats, plenty of water and maybe even sun-cream) to cold, wet and windy (meaning plenty of warm wind and rain resistant clothing. Bring sufficient food and water (or other suitable drinks) for a full-day hill walk plus a little extra, just in case!  There will not be any opportunities to buy refreshments during the walk itself though there are cafés and shops in Hope.  There are public toilets at the start point but none afterwards.

Please consider bringing a small personal first aid kit for self-administration.

Although the walk is planned to finish well within the hours of available daylight, participants may like to bring a small torch/head torch in case an emergency results in a very severe delay to the walk.
