The safety of climbing equipment has never been better. The vast majority of modern climbing equipment is well-designed, rigorously assessed against industry standards and subject to robust quality management systems. On rare occasions equipment may fall short of these standards. Manufacturers have a range of options for dealing with this, depending on the cause and severity of the problem. Here are the steps which can be taken to rectify issues with product safety. These problems could arise due to design, manufacture or quality assurance.

Edelrid Mega Jul belay device

January 2024

Edelrid have asked owners and users of their popular Mega Jul belay device to make a precautionary check for a defective attachment loop, for devices regardless of manufacturing batch. This updates a previous warning which covered a specific batch.

Ski-touring binding

December 2023

A product recall notice has been issued for ski touring bindings which present a risk of injury. The brands affected are Salomon, Atomic and Armada.

Simond Edge rope

November 2023

Decathlon have issued a recall notice for the Simond Edge rope, the models affected are the 9mm x 80m and the 9mm x 100m. Users are requested to stop using any affected product and to return it to their nearest Decathlon store and be issued a refund.

Pieps / Black Diamond avalanche transceiver

April 2022

It has been reported that a small number of avalanche transceivers from the manufacturer Pieps/Black Diamond may suffer from malfunctioning electronics. Read below to find out which devices may be affected.

Petzl Pirana descender

January 2022

The manufacturer Petzl have issued a recall for the most recent models of Pirana descender and have requested that users immediately stop using the descenders affected by this recall.

Petzl Scorpio Eashook lanyards

November 2021

Petzl have issued a recall notice for Scorpio Eashook lanyards after it was discovered that there was a risk of karabiner gate malfunction. Details are provided on how to check if your lanyard is one of those affected, and what action to take.
