Toby Roberts Claims Bronze at IFSC Boulder World Cup in Prague
British climbing sensation Toby Roberts added another medal to his collection last weekend after securing a bronze medal at the IFSC Climbing Boulder World Cup in Prague last weekend.
Roberts continued his exceptional season and secured his place on the podium after finding the top on bloc one and flashing bloc four. Fresh off his Men’s Lead gold at the IFSC World Cup in Koper earlier this month, the Olympic champion was understandably thrilled with his bronze medal finish. Speaking to the IFSC following his podium finish, he said: “I am so psyched! It was a strange final; I never thought I could be on the podium, but I did not give up. I was able to put it together and find the top on the final boulder. I can’t quite believe I’m on the podium, but I am really happy!”
The men’s Boulder final in Prague was hotly contested, with the competition going down to the wire. South Korea’s Lee Dohyun, who claimed gold at the same event last year, once again emerged on top. Lee’s composure under pressure saw him top two problems and secure four zones, a performance that not only earned him his second career World Cup gold, but also solidified his reputation in the sport.
France’s Manuel Cornu captured the silver, making a triumphant return to the IFSC World Cup podium after a five-year hiatus. Cornu’s performance featured two tops and three zones.
Elsewhere in the men’s competitions, Great Britain’s Max Milne narrowly missed the finals, finishing a commendable 8th in the semi-final round. Dayan Akhtar also showcased his potential, securing the zone on bloc one and topping bloc two in the qualification rounds, which earned him a 47th place finish.
In the women’s competition, 17-year-old Lucy Garlick finished 43rd, impressing with a flash on boulder two. Erin McNeice delivered a standout performance in the qualification round, tying for first place alongside eventual winner Natalia Grossman of the USA. In the semi-finals, the 20-year-old Olympian continued to demonstrate her strength in the Boulder field, flashing problem one and securing the zone on problem two, finishing in 10th place finish following an appeal going against her.
