This autumn the BMC celebrated 1,000 days of mountain and upland conservation work from our incredible volunteers, during a sphagnum planting moorland restoration event in the Peak District.

This is a tremendous achievement for the BMC Access and Conservation Trust's Get Stuck In initiative, founded in 2022 by charity trustee (then BMC Hill Walking Rep) Steve Charles.

Steve says, "To mark the occasion, a specially iced chocolate brownie cake was shared amongst the 18 volunteers during the latest sphagnum moss planting day in the Goyt Valley, Peak District with Moors for the Future Partnership. We planted 4000 moss plugs that day, so that brings the current total to 73,000 moss plugs planted by BMC volunteers.

"This area has seen two wildfires in recent years, including areas where moss had been planted: it was singed on top, but remained alive and damp lower down. Therefore, as well as helping to rewet the moors, reduce flooding and improve water quality, having a mossy moor helps reduce the impact and spread of wildfires."

A special cake reading, 'Get Stuck In 1,000 volunteer days' was baked to mark the occasion.
Get Stuck In founder, Steve Charles, cuts the cake to share out with the 18 volunteers present.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who volunteers for us, and to Steve Charles for setting up the Get Stuck In initiative four years ago and expanding it to over 20 events a year.

Further moss planting dates with Moors for the Future Partnership are being arranged during the winter season, more details here, and follow the BMC on Eventbrite to receive email alerts of all our upcoming Get Stuck In events and Social Walks.

Get Stuck In path repair and moorland restoration events are funded by the BMC Access & Conservation Trust.

Planting sphagnum moss in peat bog moorland helps it retain moisture which reduces erosion and the wildfire and flood risk.

What's it like planting sphagnum moss with the BMC?

Tim and his partner Paula came up from London for the weekend in the Peak District and included a day planting sphagnum moss with us. Here's what Tim had to say about his first experience volunteering.

Why did you volunteer?

It felt like the right think to do to take the opportunity to 'put something back' into the landscape that gives us and many other people so much enjoyment, and of course which has such a role to play in health and wellbeing too. Doing this under the cover of an organised event meant there was no organisational hassle and that we knew what we were doing was worthwhile. It was also a great excuse to be out in the hills with a few like-minded folk.

What was the event like?

Great! Friendly, fun, interesting, and we definitely left with a sense that something positive had been achieved. We’re looking forward to going back to inspect our work in a year or so! 10/10. Faultless. Educational, too. 😉

Would you go again?

Yes, definitely. We’re keen to try our hands at a bit of path-mending, but would certainly do more moss-planting too.

Tim and Paula travelled all the way from London to plant sphagnum moss in the Peak District and, "Put something back into the landscape that gives us so much enjoyment".

Fancy fixing footpaths in the Lake District, placing stepping stones in Eryri or planting sphagnum in the Peak District? Sign up to one of our Get Stuck In events here. And if you can't volunteer, why not gift us the amount you would have spent in fuel or on a train fare getting to a volunteer event?

Leave a legacy

A wise person once said, the most noble thing you can do is to, "plant trees under whose shade you will never sit," and likewise, fund path repair projects on which you will never walk and moorland restoration projects that you will never see. If you'd like to make a lasting impact on the landscape long after you've left this world, please consider leaving us a legacy.

Help us to continue funding Get Stuck In path repair and moorland restoration events and protecting the mountains for future generations by donating to the BMC Access and Conservation Trust's Mend Our Mountains campaign.
