Thirteen BMC volunteers repaired footpaths in the Lake District with rangers from Fix the Fells, and gifted the organisation 100 pairs of work gloves.

Now that the sphagnum moss planting season in the Peak District is over (to protect ground-nesting birds), the BMC Access & Conservation Trust's Get Stuck In volunteering events move to the Lake District and Eryri to focus on path repair and upland landscape conservation.

Get Stuck In founder and BMC Access & Conservation Trust trustee, Steve Charles, says, "The first path repair Get Stuck In event of the year was held this week on The Band in Langdale, Lake District, staying at the Fell and Rock Climbing Club hut at Raw Head.

"A group of 13 BMC volunteers attended and worked with Fix the Fells on a section of eroded path on The Band, building stone steps and cross drains to reduce erosion, and humps and hollows to keep people on the path. We also did some peat hag re-profiling nearby, which helps to preserve the peat, locking in the carbon and keeping water on the hill."

Happy BMC volunteers keen to crack on with repairing the paths for you!
New steps now ready for you to walk on up The Band in Langdale. You're welcome!

Steve continues, "In addition to this work, 100 pairs of work gloves were gifted to Fix the Fells, using funds from the BMC and Access and Conservation Trust. Hard-wearing gloves are required for all the work done on the paths. The presentation was made by regular Get Stuck In volunteers Victoria Honour, Lois Hooper-Ainsworth and Sandra Handcock, photographed below giving the gloves to Fix the Fells Ranger Rob Clarke. This donation comes after four cargo nets to help move large stones were given to Fix the Fells earlier in the year."

Protect the Sheffield Moors from Wildfire

Help us raise £50,000 this year to protect the Sheffield Moors from Wildfire - 81.2 hectares (114 football pitches!) of this beautiful moorland, including the popular walking and climbing areas of Stanage, Burbage, Froggatt and Curbar Edges, has been lost to wildfire since 2018.

Did you know that you can donate to the BMC Access & Conservation Trust entirely FREE simply by shopping online as you usually would, at any time of the year with Easyfundraising? It only takes two minutes to set up, here's how.

If you want to contribute to upland and mountain access and conservation causes like the above, then simply click here to donate to The BMC Access & Conservation Trust via The Climate Project or Mend Our Mountains campaigns at any time. One-off or regular donations of any amount are always most welcome.

Volunteer

Fancy fixing footpaths in the Lake District, placing stepping stones in Eryri or planting sphagnum in the Peak District? Sign up to one of our Get Stuck In events here. And if you can't volunteer, why not gift us the amount you would have spent in fuel or on a train fare getting to a volunteer event?

Leave a legacy

A wise person once said, the most noble thing you can do is to "plant trees under whose shade you will never sit" and, likewise, fund path repair projects on which you will never walk and moorland restoration projects which you will never see. If you'd like to make a lasting impact on the landscape long after you've left this world, please consider leaving us a legacy.
