BMC South West Area Meeting
Come to our next gathering of South West climbers and walkers and get involved in the BMC.
Join the BMC South West Area meeting as it heads to Plymouth.
Date: Tuesday 25th August
Time: Gather from 6pm for networking, meeting begins at 7pm
Location: Hybrid at the Plymouth Life Centre (40 Mayflower Drive, Plymouth PL2 3DG) and online via Zoom (see the link below)
Speakers: Two Coastguard Rescue Officers
Entry: Free to attend, all welcome - members and non-members
We will be joined by two Coastguard Rescue Officers , who are a vital part of the coastal rescue scene, but recent unilateral changes by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency of their Terms and Conditions has led to a public outcry. Many organisations, including the BMC, supported their cause and we are thrilled to be welcoming them to address our meeting.
We will also be looking at the following important issues:
- Fairy Cave belay improvements: Fairy Cave is a renowned climbing destination. Belaying here is highly dependent on strops placed round trees. As strops reach end of life and many belay trees are ash trees, in our meeting we'll look at plans for strategically placed bolt belays. This move will also protect the fragile cliff-edge environment.
- Bolting at Carn Vellan: Concern has been raised about bolting at Carn Vellan, which is in breach of the Moratorium of Fixed Gear in West Penwith. How to tackle this breach? - a proposal will be put forward. The 2011 Record of the Meeting is available in the meeting documents below.
If you choose not to or are unable to join in person then please join us online via Zoom. No pre-registration required, use the link below to join us on the night.
Area Meetings are run by volunteers and provide an opportunity for you to discuss issues and influence decisions affecting climbers and walkers locally and nationally, and to meet like-minded people and enjoy a sociable night out (or 'in' on Zoom). Whether you're a regular or brand new, it's a chance to catch up with old friends, meet new ones. So come along and have your say or just listen to what is happening locally.
