BMC welcomes four new members to the Members' Council
Following the September Members' Council meeting, the BMC is pleased to welcome four new representatives who bring unique expertise and passion to the Council.
These appointments are on a co-option basis, for approval (or otherwise) at the 2025 AGM.
As the primary representative body of the BMC, the Members' Council works closely with the Board of Directors to ensure the voices of climbers, hill walkers, and mountaineers are heard, influencing the direction of the BMC and safeguarding the interests of its members. The Council acts as a key forum for consultation, providing feedback to the Board on major decisions while ensuring transparent communication between the Board and BMC members.
The Council's voting membership comprises locally and nationally elected representatives, along with specialists from various areas of expertise. These members work tirelessly to foster the growth and sustainability of outdoor activities, ensuring that access to our natural landscapes remains open and well-managed. This year, the BMC is pleased to welcome four new representatives who bring unique expertise and passion to the Council.
Meet our new councillors
David Matthews, an active mountaineer with over 40 years of experience, has joined as the Nationally Elected Councillor for Hill Walkers. With a background in leadership and youth engagement, David has been instrumental in helping disadvantaged youth gain outdoor experiences through the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme. He has recently expanded this work by establishing an Outdoor Youth Network, connecting youth groups with opportunities to experience the outdoors. David’s deep commitment to sustainable access and conservation makes him a valuable asset to the BMC's mission of making the outdoors accessible for all.
As the new Constituency Councillor for BMC-Affiliated Club members, Emma Warne brings her experience as a marine engineer, physics teacher, and passionate climber. Currently the Membership Secretary for York Mountaineering Club, Emma is committed to promoting the joys of club membership and helping others discover the benefits of being part of a thriving climbing community. With her enthusiasm and a passion for sharing outdoor experiences, she hopes to contribute positively to the BMC’s efforts in engaging with affiliated clubs across the country.
Darren Saxton joins the Members' Council as the new Constituency Councillor for Mountain Training Candidates. With over 30 years of climbing and mountaineering experience, Darren has travelled the world and participated in numerous expeditions, from the Peak District to the Himalayas. His deep involvement with Mountain Training and his commitment to mentoring and developing future leaders in the outdoors make him a great fit for the role. Darren hopes to help bridge the gap between Mountain Training candidates and the BMC, ensuring that candidates' views are heard and that the BMC continues to support the development of training opportunities for all.
Ellie Glennie has a 21-year involvement in Mountain Training and a long history of coaching and mentoring, Ellie has helped shape the future of UK climbing. She has worked with the GB Lead Climbing Team, coached internationally, and recently mentored an athlete who qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Ellie is passionate about promoting diversity and inclusivity in climbing and hopes add perspectives of elite athletes, coaches and competition climbers to the BMC.
