We saw a strong showing from the GB Climbing Team at the European Youth Cup for Bouldering in Bulgaria, with four of the team making finals, one just missing out, and a silver medal for Emily Phillips. These up-and-coming athletes continue to do us proud. Find out more below.

Great results all round from the GB Climbing Team last weekend in Sofia, Bulgaria, as our young guns gave it all in the European Youth Cup for Bouldering against strong competition. A tough set of qualifier problems  in a packed gym made it tricky, but our team handled the pressure well to see four through to the finals and Aiden Dunne just missed out by a couple of attempts.

Maximillian Milne made it through to the Male Youth A final to place 5th, Stephen Keir went through in Male Youth B to come 4th, and Aidan Roberts in the Male Juniors for 5th place also. Meanwhile, Emily Phillps overcame her initial jitters in the Qualifiers to come second in the Female Youth B Final and win a silver medal.

We got in touch with Emily to find out what she thought about the event:

“After getting 3rd in Portugal I tried not to expect too much from Bulgaria. I obviously wanted to improve my position but anything can happen in a competition so I didn't want to get too excited.

“Qualification was pretty stressful; I started off badly and wasn't climbing my best. But managed to turn it around and get six tops.

“In the final I felt that I climbed well and was happy with my performance. I am so psyched to get 2nd place but I was a little bit frustrated with how close it was to gold. On the last problem I was two moves away from the top and 1st place.”

Looking forward, Emily now has her eyes set on her second World Youth Championships which will be held in Innsbruck, Austria, from 30 August.

“The World Youth Championships is very close now and I'm looking forward to comparing my performance to my first World Youth Champs last year in China. I have a lot to learn from that experience so hopefully I can use it to improve my position and climbing as well as I can.”

Well done to the whole GB Climbing Team and good luck at the World Youth Champs! Find the full results of the Team below.
