Saturday 14th July was the day of the senior British Bouldering Championships. This year it was held at Grave's Park in Sheffield as part of the Cliffhanger outdoors event.

Despite Friday’s rain threatening to ruin the competition the first day of Cliffhanger eventually turned out to be dry and sunny.

There were good crowds to watch the events and a record turnout of competitors - 22 senior females and 59 senior males!

The eventual winner in the senior female event was Katy Whittaker and in the senior males Gareth Parry.

After her win Katie Whittaker said: “I'm so pleased. I really wasn’t expecting it at all. There were loads of good competitors and the problems were brilliant. I'd say they were the best problems I’ve ever had in a competition”.

Gaz Parry said  “The final was awesome! But thank god it’s over! I won in Interlaken and was feeling strong today but you can never be sure what will happen on the day as the competitors are all really good. To have that big a crowd at a British championship is absolutely amazing. The sound of the cheer for the first flash was fantastic. We’ve been talking about having the championships as a one-off event for a while and it’s brilliant that it's attracted more people to see it."  One spectator was even heard to call Gaz a true machine!

But the day wasn't over with the BBCs.  There was also a dyno competition - and the world record broken by Skyler Weekes.  He's an American aged 22, from Denver Colorado.  He came over especially to attempt the dyno world record and he jumped a massive 2.625m to beat the previous record.

Prizes were presented by Alan Hinkes and his grandson - see the photo.  The finalists are ranked below:
