Public Transport: Regular trains from London Charing Cross to Tunbridge Wells

The route

Distance: Approx. 18.5 km (11.5 miles)

There is no intention to actually climb any rocks, but we will visit some outcrops on the route, to admire the lichens and epiphytes. We will start at Tunbridge wells, atop the sandstone ridge, drop down to the miry clay and pretty woods of the Weald, and go up again to Eridge Green rocks and the delightful nature reserve at Broadwater Warren. After rambling around the warren, we descend again to the BMC’s very own Harrison’s Rocks. The walk ends at Eridge station.

We are short of things to climb in the southeast, so it is worth celebrating those we have, but also taking in the surrounding landscape and geology, and hopefully the wildlife will also be visible. Don’t bring a rope or rock-boots. This is not a climbing meet.

The walk is 11.5 miles including some roads and tarmac paths within Tunbridge Wells, and short stretches on the lanes linking the rocks. The terrain will be muddy, particularly in the Weald, so wear boots.

This is a linear walk from Tunbridge Wells station to Eridge Station. For people who want to return to Tunbridge Wells to collect a car or get a train back to a convenient terminus, there are half-hourly buses from Eridge to Tunbridge Wells.

The walk will be led by volunteer Rosemary Scott.

Please do let us know if you are planning to attend, by responding to the BMC London and South East Facebook event, or sending a direct message via Facebook (not Instagram)

BMC members will be asked to wear usual clothing appropriate for a day walking in the hills and bring their own food and drink for a full day.

What to bring

The terrain is over mildly undulating countryside in an English lowland area. Please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear:

Footwear: Sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good traction.

Clothing: Dress in layers, including waterproofs, as conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves for cooler areas and perhaps sun cream depending on the weather forecast.

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s hike.

Who can attend:

This walk is open to BMC members, accompanying friends and family, with non-members being welcome too. Please note under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

All participants must book in advance.

Please do not attend if you have COVID-19 or are feeling unwell.

Health Considerations:

If you have health issues that might affect your ability to complete the walk safely, inform us in advance. Carry any necessary medications and inform the leader where they are located if needed.

BMC Participation Statement:

The BMC recognizes that climbing, hill walking, and mountaineering are activities with inherent risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
