Women in Adventure Film Workshop at Kendal Mountain Festival

The BMC Women in Adventure Filmmaking Workshop is engaging session is designed for aspiring and budding filmmakers eager to sharpen their skills, develop new techniques, or expand their professional networks. Whether you're just getting started in the world of filmmaking or looking to refine your craft, this workshop is for you. Over the course of the evening, you'll rotate through four unique sessions led by our expert filmmakers, each lasting 20 minutes. To make the most of the experience, feel free to bring along your own film ideas to workshop and refine with our mentors.

From the creators of the BMC Women in Adventure film competition, that has seen incredible entries since 2015, all are welcome to this session aimed at women and non-binary folk looking to get into filmmaking, starting out, wanting to hone their skills or do some more networking.

Hosted by Faye Latham from Kendal Mountain Festival, and presented by the BMC, this session will be a rotation workshop where you get 20 minutes with each workshop leader, before rotating round to the next workshop. The session will be followed by an opportunity to network with the people and leaders of the session. The workshops included are:

Facilitator: Roxy Barry

Bio: Roxanna Barry is a freelance director, filmmaker, and photographer based in Sheffield, whose work typically focuses on social or environmental justice, the power of community, or our drive for creativity, through the lens of outdoor adventure sports. You can catch some of Roxanna's films in the festival programme this year, including an award-winning film about Emily, co-founder of Every Body Outdoors, on a canoe expedition across the Outer Hebrides.

Facilitator: Rachel Sarah will go into the details of getting your film idea down into a pitch and then presenting it. We'll go through a couple of real pitch examples - successful and not as successful. At the end of the session you'll be given access to those examples to go over at home, as well as a digital pitch template to use for your own pitching.

Bio: Rachel Sarah is an adventure & environmental filmmaker with a love for tying together human stories with our landscapes and wildlife. She thrives on narrative-lead documentary work, and commercial campaigns centred on stories with real meaning – seeking to create work that drives others to act positively, whether for the environment, for others, or for themselves. She is the founder of the creative collective Waymakers, a women-lead outdoor creative studio.

Facilitator: Danielle Sellwood will share the basics on how to make your films accessible to the disabled community, and how this process can elevate your creative process.

Bio: Danielle Sellwood is a documentary maker who specialises in sports and adventure stories, particularly those involving women, the disabled community, and older people. After a long career in the sports industry as a sportswear designer, trend forecaster and journalist, her frustration with the lack of representation of women’s stories led her to filmmaking. As a former international canoeist, she has a rich understanding of sport and its benefits to society and brings this knowledge to her nuanced and sensitive documentaries. Alongside her storytelling skills, Danielle is a campaigner for equal access for the disabled community, specifically working to ensure films include audio description, descriptive captions and sign language.
