It was a busy calendar for competition climbing last week as Innsbruck hosted four World Cup events for Speed, Boulder, Lead and the Paraclimbing World Cup. Here’s how the GB Climbing athletes got on:

Speed World Cup 12 June

Blink and you'll miss it!

First up last week and representing GB Climbing was speed demon Rafe Stokes who flew up the wall in qualification with a best time of 5.78 seconds.

Unfortunately, in finals, Rafe said a number of slips and a massive dry fire at the top meant he finished in 11th with a time of 9.59 seconds. Unlucky Rafe! The sub-six-second in qualification shows he's still consistently getting those times and hopefully Rafe keep it up and bring it to the next IFSC Speed World Cup in Villars on 2 July.

Paraclimbing World Cup 12-13 June

It was a whirlwind event with a huge team out to represent GB. Seven of our athletes made it through a tough qualification round to have a shot at winning a medal in finals. It was amazing to watch and we were cheering them on as so many were achingly close to securing a medal. With four of the GB Paraclimbing Team ending up on the podium, there was still lots to celebrate!

One Gold and three Bronze medals!

A special mention goes to Abbie who just seems to be operating in a whole different stratosphere. Her cool, calm execution led her easily to the top of the finals route to emphatically win the Gold medal - which brings Abbie's hoard of gold medals up to a staggering eight in total! 🔥

Results of the Finals:
Abbie Robinson 1st B2 Female
Jo Newton 3rd AL Female
Martha Evans 3rd RP3 Female
Rich Slocock 3rd B2 Male
Seb Musson 4th AU2 male
Anita Aggarwal 4th RP3 female
Luke Smith 4th RP3 male

Results from Qualifiers:
Luke Jamieson 8th RP1 Male
Laurence Morgan 10th RP1 Male
Alex Downes 15th RP1 Male
Jonathan Shields 14th AL2 Male
Lucy Keyworth 12th RP1 Female -  her first World Cup
Isabella Walsh 5th AU2 Female - just one place from making finals, unlucky!
Kenneth Ellacott 14th RP2 Male – didn’t come last despite having to withdraw mid-competition due to injury

If you didn't manage to watch live, we highly recommend you catch up over on the IFSC Youtube channel where you can find the full replay or you can watch the highlights of the finals below!

Boulder World Cup June 14-16

GB women faced a strong field in Innsbruck Boulder Qualifications as well as the heat, with a glorious sunny day and temperatures reaching the mid-20s.

Despite none of the team securing a place in semis we still saw great performances. There were strong efforts all round with Louise Flockhart and Lucy Garlick both securing one top in their first appearances in senior world cups.

Holly Toothill’s competition experience shone through with less attempts but not quite enough to make it through to Semi-finals.

Results:
Holly Toothill 43rd
Louise Flockhart 51st
Lucy Garlick 51st

Setters really turned the heat on in Innsbruck for the men's Boulder Qualification round where tops were the exception not the rule. Savage scenes.

Toby Roberts put in another raw performance with two tops and three zones and moved into the semis in 7th place. Jack McDougall got achingly close with an incredible 23rd place. A great performance from this relative newcomer to the senior circuit.

Semis saw Roberts put in a beastly performance to finish outside finals cut-off in 9th place overall.

Results:
Toby Roberts 9th
Jack McDougall 23rd
Max Milne 35th
Sam Butterworth 59th
Joe Xiberras 73rd

Lead World Cup 17-18 June

The first semi-finals of the lead season saw Molly Thompson-Smith and Toby Roberts take to the wall. After a long day of competition Thompson-Smith secured 9th place, narrowly falling short of reaching the finals, whilst Roberts concluded his competition in 16th.

Results:
Molly Thompson-Smith 9th
Zoe Peetermans 57th
Lucy Garlick 70th

Results:
Toby Roberts 16th
Hamish McArthur 27th
Jack MacDougall 58th
Samuel Butterworth 75th
James Pope 82nd

Next stop on the World Cup tour will be in Villars, Switzerland, for a Speed and Lead event starting on 30 June.
