Your BMC walk leader

Sarah Lister, a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader, is based in Edale, at the foot of Kinder Scout. The stunning landscape first captured her attention in 2016 and has since become a significant inspiration for her work as a Career Coach and as the host of two podcasts, Wild About Kinder and About The Adventure. This adventure will take us on a route inspired by her book Mountain Walks Kinder Scout.

The route

This social walk will begin in Edale, where we'll ascend onto the Kinder plateau. Sarah finds Kinder Scout a fascinating and ever-changing place, and with her expert guidance, we'll explore its dramatic edges, moorland plateau, gritstone rocks, and hidden cloughs.

We’re excited to welcome you for a memorable day outdoors! While we’ll finalise the route closer to the day, we’re likely to follow something similar to a reverse Route 8 from Sarah's book.

Distance: Approx. 13 km (8 miles)

Ascent: 400m (1700 ft)

Duration: Approximately 5 hours

BMC members will be asked to wear usual clothing appropriate for a day walking in the hills and bring their own food and drink for a full hill day.

What to bring

We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear:

Footwear:  On parts of the walk we’ll encounter rough/boggy underfoot conditions, so sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good traction are essential and gaiters might prove useful.

Clothing: Dress in layers, including waterproofs, as conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves.  It can be a lot colder on the Kinder plateau than Hayfield.

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s hike; there will be no places to purchase refreshments once we’ve started the walk.

Other Essentials: Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is advisable for emergencies.

Who can attend:

This walk is open to BMC members, accompanying friends and family, and anyone interested in BMC’s work, under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

All participants must book in advance.

Please do not attend if you have COVID-19 or are feeling unwell.

Health Considerations:

If you have health issues that might affect your ability to complete the walk safely, inform us in advance. Carry any necessary medications and inform the leader where they are located if needed.

BMC Participation Statement:

This is an approved BMC event.

The BMC recognizes that climbing, hill walking, and mountaineering are activities with inherent risks. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
