The British Mountaineering Council (BMC), climbers, mountaineers and hill walkers have and will always be about community, inclusion and support.

The acts of violence that we are seeing across the country stand against everything we believe in. These are not protests or free speech, they are acts of violence in an attempt to fan the flames of racial hate and islamophobia.

This is an especially difficult time for our colleagues and friends who have been made to feel unsafe in their own communities.

Sport, recreational and physical activity have a unique ability to unite people and foster connection. In these challenging and uncertain times, they can and should serve as a positive force for good.

But it is often in the worst of moments where the best of people can be seen. Amongst the abhorrent acts, we have begun to see the very best of our society too. People from all backgrounds and walks of life coming together to help one another, a true expression of our country’s values.

The BMC actively promotes, encourages and values diversity across our community and continue to work towards a more tolerant, fair, and inclusive society.

I hope that you, our clubs and volunteers are able to stay safe. I know we all stand in solidarity with those affected.

Paul Ratcliffe, CEO & The BMC Team
