Hut Guidelines
About the BMC Huts Group
A small but very dedicated and knowledgeable group of volunteers make up the BMC Huts Group. It has two key focuses – supporting clubs who own or operate mountain huts, and supporting the three national huts.
The Group offers direct advice and support to BMC-affiliated clubs on the many issues they raise, including: child safeguarding; employers’ liability insurance; fire protection; health and safety; risk assessments; unpaid hut fees; private water supplies; security locks; septic tanks; building developments; corporation tax; grant funding applications; and environmental sustainability.
The BMC Huts Group publish, and regularly update, a series of guidelines covering topics of interest to clubs that own huts.
These topics include new legislation, safety regulations and responses to common queries. The guidelines are drawn up by volunteers and produced jointly by the BMC Huts Group and the Mountaineering Scotland Huts Working Group. Where English and Scottish law differ separate guidelines have been produced for Scottish clubs and English clubs with huts in Scotland.
