Julie Smith appointed as Head of Finance at the British Mountaineering Council
The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) announces the appointment of Julie Smith as its Head of Finance effective 2 December 2024.
A qualified chartered accountant, Julie brings a wealth of knowledge to the BMC, with over 30 years of financial experience and leadership roles in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors. She has most recently served as the Financial Controller at British Cycling.
Julie has strong technical knowledge and experience in financial planning, accounts preparation and management of insurance policies. Alongside her extensive experience, this background equips her with a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities facing not-for-profit and membership organisations.
On her appointment, Julie Smith, incoming Head of Finance, said: “I am very much looking forward to getting started in December this year and the opportunity to work with the staff team and for our members. I look forward to playing my part in the BMC’s mission to protect the future activities of hill walking, climbing and mountaineering.”
Paul Ratcliffe, Chief Executive of the BMC, said: “I would like to congratulate Julie on her appointment as Head of Finance. Julie was the standout candidate from the recruitment process, and we look forward to welcoming her to the BMC as part of our Senior Management Team. This is a critical leadership role for the BMC, as we look to build financial stability and develop our budgets and plans for 2025 and beyond.”
The BMC also welcomes Trevor Campbell Davis to the interim role of Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee (FAC). Trevor, a past Treasurer and current Chair of the Finance Committee of the Alpine Club, will be working closely with Julie and the finance team and will lead the FAC as they continue putting robust financial processes in place.
