To help you prepare, we’ve teamed up with Cotswold Outdoor, our official outdoor retailer, to bring you a comprehensive guide to the essential walking kit. Investing in quality gear ensures you’re ready for whatever the trail throws at you.

Waterproof Jacket
British weather is famously unpredictable, so a reliable waterproof jacket is a must. Look for a breathable, lightweight option that provides protection from rain and wind while allowing sweat to escape. A good jacket will keep you dry and comfortable, no matter the conditions.
Layered Clothing System
Dressing in layers allows you to regulate your temperature efficiently. The classic layering system consists of:
- Base Layer: Wicks moisture away from your skin to keep you dry.
- Mid Layer: Provides insulation and retains warmth.
- Outer Layer: Shields against wind and rain.
By adjusting your layers, you can stay comfortable throughout your walk, whatever the weather.
Footwear
Your choice of footwear can make or break your walk. Well-fitting walking boots or shoes with good ankle support and grip will help you stay stable on varied terrain. Pair them with moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters and keep your feet comfortable for longer.
Navigation Tools
Even if you’re walking a familiar route, carrying navigation tools is vital. Consider bringing:
- Map and Compass: Essential for traditional navigation and route planning.
- GPS Device or Smartphone App: Useful for real-time location tracking—but always carry a backup in case of battery failure.
Knowing how to use these tools before setting out can prevent navigational mishaps.
